In this photograph Attorney General Robert Kennedy, McGeorge Bundy, Vice President Lydon Johnson, Arthur Schlesinger, Admiral Arleigh Burke, President John F. Kennedy and Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy watch NASA astronaut Alan B. Shepard on television. Shepard is striding across the deck of the U.S. Navy carrier Lake Champlain following an inspection of his spacecraft on May 5, 1961. He had just completed the first manned suborbital flight in the Project Mercury Program.
