Probably the best known speech by Herbert Hoover, it celebrates the importance of human achievement and excellence . Originally given during a fund-raising event for Wilmington College in 1948, this speech became very popular and was repeated in slightly altered form by the former president on several occasions. This is the text of the original version. The speech has become a favorite of Republicans seeking to blame Democrats for encouraging mediocrity and "the cult of the common man ".
