To escape the city's summer heat, President Abraham Lincoln and his family took refuge at a cottage on the grounds of the Soldiers' Home at the outskirts of Washington, DC. During the move from the White House to the "Lincoln Cottage" on June 29, 1864, Lincoln sent this telegram to First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln to inform her that all was well.
