Citizens of Twiggs County, Georgia, sent this letter to Senators M. Hoke Smith and Thomas W. Hardwick, opposing the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, the name given to the 19th Amendment.
The letter states that to "give equal suffrage in the South would only open the way to race riots, murder, and a repetition of the 'Reconstruction Days of the Sixties'. We most earnestly appeal to you to do what you can for our defense and protection in this most signal injustice."
