Commodore Matthew C. Perry's personal account of his expedition to Japan is filled with descriptions and illustrations of the animals, flowers, and people that he observed thoughout the voyage. This drawing is from the part of Perry's journals that relates to the first leg of the trip from Norfolk, Virginia, through the Cape of Good Hope to the Bonin Islands in the summer of 1853. Artists who accompanied the expedition made the illustrations.
