Original caption states: "Cryptanalysis of U.S. Traffic: Here message traffic, in the same form in which enemy cryptanalysts might receive it, is prepared for analysis. In the left and center background tele-type copy and tapes are being sorted according to indicator. On the right, traffic is logged by system indicator, date, and message indicator. In the left foreground statistics on message indicators are compiled from the log book. The racks and filing cabinets pictured in the background contain ETO and AFHQ traffic that has been processed and stored for future use of analysts."
