This photograph shows President Jimmy Carter shaking hands with Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In April of 1980, President Carter had appointed Ginsburg as a judge to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She served for 13 years, until her nomination to the United States Supreme Court.
