Muhammad Anwar al-Sadat, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and Menachem Begin, Prime Minister of Israel, met with President Jimmy Carter at Camp David from September 5 to September 17, 1978, and agreed on a framework for peace in the Middle East.
Camp David, the Presidential retreat in Maryland, was the meeting site for the peace negotiations and has a long history of hosting diplomatic meetings. FDR hosted Winston Churchill at Camp David in 1943, when the compound was known as Shangri-La.
