James Meredith's letter to the Department of Justice concerning his attempts to gain admission to the University of Mississippi.

James Meredith attempted to register at the all-white University of Mississippi, known as "Ole Miss," in January, 1961. Meredith, an African American, had the support of the federal government, which insisted that Mississippi honor the rights of all its citizens, regardless of race.
