This illustration entitled, "Will the Base Runner Start for Third?", by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Post on August 17, 1906, show anxious hopefuls for the Republican nomination for President in the 1908 race, wondering if President Theodore Roosevelt will run for a second full term of his own.
Theodore Roosevelt became President when William McKinley was assassinated in September 1901, after serving just six months of his second term. After Roosevelt won reelection in 1904, politicians and news media began to speculate as to whether Roosevelt would run again in 1908 and whether that would violate the unwritten "two-term rule."
Roosevelt announced from his Sagamore Hill retreat that he supported House Speaker Joseph Cannon for the 1908 Presidential race. Other hopefuls were keeping their eyes on Roosevelt, hoping to gain his support for the nomination. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman shows the athletic Roosevelt in baseball uniform on second base (term), poised to run for a third term. The hopefuls watch from the stands.
