In 1754 Britain instructed colonial officials to organize a treaty conference with the powerful Iroquois Confederacy, or Six Nations. The Anglo–Six Nations partnership had weakened over the years, and the growing French presence in the Ohio Valley convinced Britain that renewing it was essential for the survival of their North American colonies.
The gathering, which convened in Albany in June 1754, attracted delegates from seven northeastern colonies. Some 150 Iroquois attended, including the Mohawk leader Hendrick. He complained that New York officials had turned their backs on the Six Nations. At the treaty council, Iroquois leaders complained that New York Indian officials had recognized fraudulent land deeds and permitted traders to sell rum in Native communities.
Ultimately, the treaty council was a qualified success for both sides. The alliance was strengthened, and the Iroquois went home with 30 wagonloads of presents, including 400 guns.
