The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States can be removed from office by the impeachment process if convicted of crimes. This document is a resolution of impeachment of President Andrew Johnson written by Representative John Covode and submitted to the Committee on Reconstruction on February 21, 1868. The Committee brought the resolution in front of the House, and the House voted to impeach Johnson. The Senate sat as the court with Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase presiding. President Johnson was acquitted by one vote.
