This photograph shows students conducting physics experiments at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The school, the first of the off-reservation boarding schools operated by the Federal Government, offered classes in reading, writing, math, mechanical arts, agriculture, and home economics. The goal of the failed experiment of boarding schools was to forcibly assimilate Native American children into the prevailing culture of the United States.
