FWA:PBA: Paintings and Sculptures for Public Buildings:painting depicting hockey players from early 1900's in old-fashioned uniforms: Artist Henry Billings: Lake Placid New York, ca. 1937 This painting was created as part of the Federal Art Project (FAP), the visual arts program conducted by the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal agency. Opening August 29, 1935 as the latest in a short series of Great Depression-art visual arts programs, it closed on June 30, 1943. Its primary goals were to employ out-of-work artists and to provide art for non-Federal government buildings: schools, hospitals, libraries and the like. The Work Projects Administration and Federal Art Project were transferred to the Federal Works Agency in 1939. This and other paintings are part of Paintings and Sculptures for Public Buildings under the Public Buildings Administration in the Federal Works Agency.
