This letter from Nellie Neuhousen thanks Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes for his support of Marian Anderson's April 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial.
By 1939, African-American singer Marian Anderson had toured Europe impressing crowds and composers alike. But in this country, she was banned from many concert halls because of her race. When she was not permitted to sing in Constitution Hall by its owners the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Department of the Interior arranged a concert at the Lincoln Memorial. 75,000 people attended, including the author of this letter, and millions more listened on the radio.
