In this image, cartoonist Clifford Berryman captures the spirit of Mother's Day by showing an American soldier sitting on the edge of his trench with his rifle at his side and an American flag waving above him. Here amidst the chaos of battle during World War I, the soldier writes a letter to his mother, with her image clearly in his mind.
Berryman was one of Washington, DC's best-known cartoonists in the early to mid-1900s. He drew for the Washington Post and Evening Star newspapers. His cartoons touched on a variety of subjects including politics, elections, and both World Wars.
