Lewis Ruslander, Chairman of the Public Relations Committee of Montefiore Lodge No. 70, B'nai B'rith of Buffalo, New York, sent this letter to Charles Wilson, Chairman of the President's Committee on Civil Rights.

President Harry Truman established the President's Committee on Civil Rights by Executive Order 9808 on December 5, 1946. Its purpose was to propose measures to strengthen and protect the civil rights of the American people. The committee, chaired by General Electric President Charles E. Wilson, terminated after it submitted and published its final report, titled To Secure These Rights, in December 1947.

Montefiore Lodge No. 70 congratulated the President's Committee on Civil Rights on their report "laying bare the glaring instances of the infringement on civil rights in contradiction of our Constitution and its Amendments." They expressed their hope that Congress would enact legislation to implement the recommendations from the report.

The National Archives

DocsTeach is a product of the National Archives education division. Our mission is to engage, educate, and inspire all learners to discover and explore the records of the American people preserved by the National Archives.

The National Archives and Records Administration is the nation's record keeper. We save documents and other materials created in the course of business conducted by the U.S. Federal government that are judged to have continuing value. We hold in trust for the public the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights — but also the records of ordinary citizens — at our locations around the country.
