The original caption for this photograph reads: "Gen. Miles and Buffalo Bill viewing hostile Indian camp near Pine Ridge, S.D., January 16, 1891, photo and copyright 1891 by Grabill."
It comes from a court case related to copyright infringement. Photographer John Grabill brought a lawsuit against William F. Cody, commonly called "Buffalo Bill" Cody, and several of his business associates. Cody and the other defendants allegedly published Grabill's photographs without permission.
Grabill photographed Cody and General Nelson Miles on horseback viewing a "hostile Indian camp" of Oglala Lakota at Pine Ridge, Dakota Territory in 1891, shortly after the Ghost Dance at Pine Ridge, the shooting of Sitting Bull, and the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29, 1890.
The court dispute was settled by a stipulation between the plaintiff and defendants.
