Photographer Ted Wathen captured Gonzalee disabled by Black Lung disease after 42 years of working in the mine. Gonzalee Sullivan was photographed three decades earlier by Russell Lee during a survey for the Solid Fuels Administration for War.
In the wake of the 1973 energy crisis, the Carter administration looked to coal for energy security. President Jimmy Carter formed the President’s Commission on Coal to conduct a study of the industry. The President’s Commission on Coal documented improvements and persisting problems in the lives of coal miners three decades after the 1946 survey.
