In this tiny notebook, a food adulterant investigator wrote, “This sample of candy requires a very careful examination. After eating of it— one child died and two others were taken sick.” Tragic stories like this rallied women’s clubs across the country to support the “pure food” bill. Their passionate crusade helped overcome the powerful opposition mounted by drug companies and distillers.
