This illustration entitled "Col. Bryan Continues to Cast significant glances in the Direction of the Exit", by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Post on October 13, 1898, depicts William Jennings Bryan, who had served as a Colonel during the Spanish - American War, gives his attention to an outside scene where a favorite topic of his is being addressed, as Uncle Sam lectures on a plan for a Cuban Military Government. In 1896 William Jennings Bryan had overwhelmed the delegates at the Democratic Party's nominating convention with his famous "Cross of Gold" speech in which he forcefully advocated the free coinage of silver at a ratio of 16:1 with gold. He was unsuccessful in the fall campaign. During the Spanish-American War, he served as a Colonel but his eye was clearly on the 1900 Presidential election. In this cartoon Clifford Berryman's familiar character, Uncle Sam, lectures officers on a Plan of Cuban Military Government while Bryan peers outside at the stump speakers promoting the 16:1 ratio. There is no question of where Bryan's real interests are.
