This claim was submitted by Florence Gwinn, the wife of William L. Gwinn who was a sea postal clerk working for the U.S. Postal Service on the Titanic. He lost his life fulfilling his duty. He was last seen dragging several sacks from the mail room up into the post office in a desperate bid to save the mail as the Titanic was sinking.
This document comes from the “In the Matter of the Petition of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, Limited, for Limitation of its Liability as owner of the steamship TITANIC” case that began after the sinking of the Titanic.
This case was initiated to limit the liability of the Titanic’s owner, the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., for loss of life and property resulting from the sinking of the ship on its maiden voyage. The Ocean Steam Navigation Company (better known as White Star Line), did not want to pay in full the hundreds of claims for compensation filed by survivors and relatives of victims of the sinking. The case file contains court papers, evidence, and claims of survivors and representatives of the deceased.
