This photograph shows participants and an American flag at a civil rights event in Selma, Alabama, in 2000. They were commemorating “Bloody Sunday," which happened on March 7, 1965. During Bloody Sunday, a peaceful protest in Selma turned violent after civil rights protesters were suppressed by state troopers using violence and tear gas. After many Americans saw the events broadcast on TV, there was great support for Federal voting rights legislation to guarantee the right to vote regardless of race.
