This illustration entitled, "Can He Make the Animal Drink?", by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Post on May 6, 1900, shows William Jennings Bryan trying to make another Presidential bid based on the free silver issue, depicted by the 16 to 1 silver to gold ratio, which he strongly advocated. In the 1896 Presidential election, William Jennings Bryan campaigned largely on the issue of free silver, gaining a large grassroots following. He lost the election to William McKinley, but would not give up on his Presidential ambitions or his insistence on free silver, running again in the 1900 election. As evidenced in this cartoon by Clifford Berryman, Bryan attempted once again to run on the silver issue, trying to push the Democratic donkey to the 16 to 1 ratio water, the ratio of silver to gold that Bryan endorsed. Bryan would ultimately be unsuccessful in getting the donkey to drink the water and his Presidential campaign would fail.
