This case in the U.S. District Court for the Charleston Division of the Southern District of West Virginia was a class action brought by the Barnettes and other Jehovah's witnesses on behalf of their children who were "of compulsory school age" and who were forced to salute the flag according to the regulations of the West Virginia State Board of Education. This final order, judgement, and, decree prohibited the board of education and schools from requiring the children of the plaintiffs (Barnettes and others), or "any other children having religious scruples against such action, to salute the flag of the United States, or any other flag, or from expelling [them] from school for failure to salute it."
