Margreta A. Hughes, of Brighton, Massachusetts, sent this letter to Senator Henry F. Ashurst, chairman of the Judiciary Committee. She urges him to do all in his power to give the Equal Rights Amendment an opportunity to come before Congress. She wrote that "women now fully realize that the Constitution is a Bill of Rights for men only," and asks Congress to "give the women of our country...the status of persons, in place of the traditional chattel."
