Armistice Day is November 11 and commemorates the signing of the armistice between the Allies of World War I and Germany on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month" in 1918 which marked the end of the First World War.
In contrast with the previous year, which had a huge procession ceremony and featured some of the world's most powerful nations, in 1922 President Harding took a simple observance of the day. A small group of individuals including President Harding left the White House early in the morning to lay a wreath symbolizing the nations Armistice Day tribute on the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery.
