The 26th amendment to the Constitution lowered the voting age to 18. Arizona ratified it on May 26, 1971. The amendment states that "the right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age." Congress had passed the proposed amendment on March 23, 1971. Thirteen weeks later it had been ratified, or approved, by three-fourths of the states and became the 26th Amendment.
