As a young man, botanist George Washington Carver, famous for his research on peanuts, claimed 160 acres of land under the Homestead Act near the town of Beelerville, Kansas. This affidavit announces that he intends to prove his claim––to take legal possession of the land––on June 21, 1888. He eventually relinquished his homestead claim to attend Simpson College in Iowa.
