This aerial photograph shows a section of New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 15, 1952. The city’s famous French Quarter is located just above the curve of the upper bank of the Mississippi River, in the center of the photograph. A major port since the 18th century, the city’s Gulf Coast location leaves it vulnerable to tropical storms.
