This aerial photograph shows the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on September 26, 1949. In early July 1863, one of the Civil War’s most important battles was fought at Gettysburg, resulting in the highest number of casualties suffered by Americans in any conflict. Later that year, President Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, which can be seen on the outskirts of town in the middle of the photograph.
