This 1885 speech by Rear Admiral Thomas O. Selfridge, Jr. recollects the March 8, 1862 battle between the U.S. Frigate Cumberland and CSS Virginia in Hampton Roads, Virginia. At the time of the battle, Selfridge was a lieutenant who commanded one of the ship's gun divisions.
