The left page of this census schedule, starting on line 39, shows Ralph Waldo Emerson and his family living in Concord, Massachusetts, in Middlesex County. (The second and third images are close-ups.)
The entry includes 47-year-old Emerson; his wife, Lydia (age 47); and daughters Ellen (11) and Edith (8) on the left page. On the right page, the household continues with son Edward (5), and other adults living in the household: "Mrs." (82), Margarett Casey (23), Mary Banin (18), Mary Hutchins (16), and handyman James Burke (30).
The 1850 census was the first one that listed individuals instead of families and that included questions about place of birth, age, and occupation.
