The President of the United States-
To the Marshall of the District of Vermont
Whereas Matthew Lyon of Fairhaven in the County of Rutland in the District of Vermont before the the Circuit Court of the United States begun & held at Rutland within and for the said district on the Third day of October in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven hundred and ninety eight and of the Independence of the said United States the twenty third, was convicted of writing, Printing, uttering & publishing certain false scandalous & seditious Libels and of aiding abetting and assisting therein – contrary to the form force & effect of the Statute entitled “An Act in addition to an Act entitled an Act for the punishment of certain crimes against the United Stated” – and sentenced to imprisonment for the term of four calendar months. To pay a fine of one thousand Dollars to the United States and the cost of this prosecution taxed at Sixty Dollars & Ninety Six cents – as appears of record whereof Execution remains to be done.
Therefore by the Authority of the United States you are hereby commanded to imprison him the said Mathew Lyon in either of the Goals of the United States within and for the District of Vermont for the Term of four calendar months from the date hereof – and on his the said Mathew Lyons’ neglect or refusal to pay said fine and costs you are to keep and detain him the said Mathew in imprisonment as aforesd until he pay the said Fine with fifty cents for the court and costs. And the costs of commitment together with your fees or till he be otherwise discharged according to the Law –
And of this writ with your doings herein make due return according to the Law at but said Court on the last day of May next –
