On April 5, 1968, Army Specialist Fourth Class Dennis Kurpius photographed Private First Class Raymond Rumpa of the U.S. Army’s 9th Infantry Division carrying a 45-pound 90 mm recoilless rifle in front of a burning Vietcong base camp in My Tho, South Vietnam. Rumpa, of St. Paul, Minnesota, was a member of C Company, 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry.
