This handmade poster celebrates the 40th anniversary of Title Nine. Title IX, which was included in the Education Amendments Act of 1972, prohibits sex discrimination in education programs supported by Federal dollars. The Act opened doors for young women—especially in athletics. The number of women playing sports in high school and college quintupled by the 1980s.
The photograph was taken during a basketball event marking the 40th anniversary of Title IX at a gym in Washington, DC. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and U.S. Representative to the United Nations Susan Rice were among the Government officials who participated.
