The Pioneers by Lorado Taft was erected in Elmwood, IL in 1928.
The 10-foot high bronze sculpture depicts a pioneer couple with baby, dog, and rifle. The male figure has a leather strap across his chest with a pouch and powder horn. His right hand holds a rifle while his left arm is around the female figure. The female figure holds a small baby in her arms in a fringed basket. Both husband and wife are dressed in mid-19th century clothing.
Inscribed on the base is “To the Pioneers who Bridged the Streams, Subdued the Soil, and Founded a State.”
