The original caption of this photograph reads: Marines aboard a Navy transport study a relief model of Tarawa atoll a few days previous to the famed 76-hour battle by the Second Marine Division for the former Jap stronghold. Many of these relief models were made by the Relief Mapping Section of the 2nd Division, so each Marine would be familiar with detailed terrain features for the Saipan operation.
