This is a copy of a lithograph produced by the Detroit Publishing Company, based on a painting by John Trumbull. It shows the surrender of the British army at Yorktown, Virginia, the last major campaign of the Revolutionary War. Trumbull’s original painting is on display in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
It comes from a collection of photographs taken by Joseph Abel, a scientist with the Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Industry and an amateur photographer, from 1899–1932.
