This Protection of the Flag Monument was unveiled in 1902 in Athens, Pennsylvania.
Atop the granite pedestal is an eight foot sculpture of a soldier and a drummer boy. The soldier is depicted with a bandage on his head and a rifle in his right hand. The barefooted drummer boy is holding a broken loosely rolled flag in his left hand with a drum at his side. Inscribed on the pedestal is “Pro Patria et Gloria. Erected to the Memory of our Soldiers who Fought in Defense of the Flag.”
