Union General Edward Otho Cresap Ord posed with his wife and only daughter on the south portico of the Confederate White House in Richmond, Virginia, towards the end of the Civil War. Ord played a key role in the final drive to Appomattox, where General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia surrendered. Pictured in the background, between his daughter and wife, is the table on which Lee signed the surrender document. Ord present at the signing ceremony, had purchased the table from its owner for $40.
