Ruby Bridges became famous as the first African-American child to desegregate the all-White William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana. She had to walk past angry protestors in order to enter.
The photograph was taken on July 15, 2011, when Bridges visited the White House. The iconic painting in the background – The Problem We All Live With by Norman Rockwell – shows U.S. Marshals escorting Bridges into her school.
