Description

This photograph shows Comdr. A.F. Birch numbering “Little Boy” as unit L-11 before loading on trailer in Assembly Building #1. Unit L-11 was the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Dr. Ramsey standing nearby.

It comes from a series of black and white photos documenting the preparation and loading of the first two atomic bombs, “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” at the base of the 509th Composite Group at Tinian Island in the Marianas.
