[printed] THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
To the Marshal for the Eastern District of Virginia, Greeting:
You are hereby commanded to give public notice, at least fourteen days before the day of trial
hereinafter mentioned, by advertisement in the [handwritten] Virginia State Journal [printed] , a
newspaper published in the [handwritten] City of Alexandria [printed] , and by posting up a
notification at the Court-house door of the District Court of the Eastern District of Virginia in
said city, and by proclamation at said Court-house door twice a week till the day of trial
aforesaid, that [handwritten] L H Chandler [printed] , attorney of the United States for said
district has caused [struck through] [handwritten] all the rights titles interests and Estate of
Robert E Lee in and to all that certain piece parcel or lot of land and on to the House and
buildings thereon situated and lying in Alexandria County in the Eastern District of Virginia,
known as the Arlington House Estate, formerly owned by George Washington Parke Custis and
lately occupied by the said Robert E Lee consisting of Eleven Hundred acres more or less
Together with all the goods chattals and other personal property of the said Robert E Lee on and
upon the said premises [struck through]
[printed] to be seized by you as forfeited to the United States. That he did, on the [handwritten]
22 nd [printed] day of [handwritten] February [printed] , 186 [handwritten] 4 [printed] , file in the
clerk’s office of said District Court a libel of information on behalf of the United States against
the said [handwritten] Tract of land & Personal property [printed] and against all persons
lawfully intervening for their interest therein, and for the causes in said libel set forth, praying for
condemnation of the same to the use of the United States, and that said court has appointed the
[handwritten] First Monday [printed] of [handwritten] April [printed] , 186 [handwritten] 4
[printed] , and the court-room in the said city, as the time and place for the trial of said cause,
when and where all persons interested in said [handwritten] Tract of land and Personal property,
[printed] or claiming an interest therein, may appear and make their allegations in that behalf.
Herein fail not, and make return of this warrant into said clerk’s office without delay, so
endorsed as to show time and manner of execution by you.
