To the Senate of the United States:
Conf- I nominate Joel R. Poinsett, of the state of South Carolina, to be Secretary of War of the United States, the said office being now held by Benjamin F. Butler whose appointment will expire, by the terms thereof, so soon as a person, duly appointed shall have accepted & entered on the duties [struck through] of said office.
