This monument of Matthew Fontaine Maury by F. William Sievers was unveiled in 1929 in Richmond, Virginia. Built on Monument Avenue, the bronze sculpture of Maury is seated in front of a globe. The base is inscribed “Pathfinder of the Seas.”
There had been some opposition to the statues along Monument Avenue in Richmond since their installation because of their celebration of the Confederacy. In 2020, the Matthew Fontaine Maury Monument was vandalized during protests. It was removed by City of Richmond in July 2020.
