This illustration entitled, “Maine Election Results”, by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Evening Star on September 11, 1912, depicts the three Presidential candidates, Woodrow Wilson, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt, happy with the election results in Maine. The governorship went to the Republicans, which was encouraging for both Taft and Roosevelt, but a split in the Republican vote could hand the Democrats and Wilson a win in the general election. However, Uncle Sam appears anxious at the results.
