Lt. Gen. Ulysses Grant sent this telegram to U.S. Secretary of War E. M. Stanton on August 11, 1864. It recommends promoting William T. Sherman to the rank of major general, and Winfield S. Hancock and Philip H. Sheridan to the rank of brigadier general, for their accomplishments during the war.
