This was the last telegram sent from the American Embassy in Saigon, South Vietnam, before the city fell to North Vietnamese troops. It was sent to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
President Gerald R. Ford had ordered the evacuation of Americans before 40,000 North Vietnamese troops entered the city. Within 18 hours, 8,000 people were evacuated—1,000 American civilians and almost 7,000 South Vietnamese refugees.
