John McCain, a naval aviator, was shot down and captured by the North Vietnamese while flying a bombing mission on October 26, 1967, during the Vietnam War. Held for five and a half years, McCain endured torture and solitary confinement before his release on March 14, 1973. McCain, facing the camera, just to the left of the bus, was photographed with other prisoners at their release.
